Reeth Gazette

The Reeth & District Gazette is the free local news magazine of Arkengarthdale and Swaledale. It is also available as a pdf download here. This page also has an archive of previous editions & a list of advertisers.

It carries news of the many activities happening in the two dales, readers' letters, church & chapel events, local parish councils' reports, advance notices of forthcoming events and programs for them

Held every Friday on Reeth Green

Swaledale Museum

  • The Museum, Shop & Café are open daily 10.30 to 5.30, apart from Saturdays, Easter to the end of October. Exhibits explain the development of the area from its geological foundations, via early human occupation in the Iron Age, to the growth and decline of lead mining between the 1650s and1950s.
  • There are many exhibits illustrating the lives and work of the Dales' people.
  • The 'Friends of the Museum' organise many talks and walks and produce an informative newsletter.

Reeth Community Orchard

  • The Community Orchard Garden is open all year round to those who enjoy borders full of colourful perennials, a shady bench under a tree or beside seasonally planted tubs, an area where young children can play using their imagination, and a small flower meadow recreating those seen and preserved higher up the dale.   • The Orchard Gallery. Don’t miss seeing the giant allium sculpture made by Michael Kusz from bicycle parts to mark the Tour de France and sponsored by the Swaledale Festival.

The Parish Newsletter


The Visitor

The Official Guide to the Yorkshire Dales National Park and an essential read. It may be collected free from Hudson House and many other places. It may be viewed online here. It has many articles and pages of diary dates covering the whole National Park.

Reeth Show

Reeth Show is a traditional Dales Agricultural Show now held on the August Bank holiday Monday. It has a wide range of entertainments, fell races, shows, displays, stalls and refreshments as well as the usual animal classes and displays of vintage vehicles.

Muker Show

A small and friendly traditional agriculture and horticultural show blessed with an enviable location – the meadows in Muker village –  with stunning views up and down the dale. The show is always held on the first Wednesday of September.

Tan Hill Sheep Show

The Agricultural Show with emphasis on the local Swaledale breed of sheep, held by the Tan Hill Inn - the highest pub in England.

Wensleydale Show

The Wensleydale Agricultural Show on the Leyburn show ground. It’s celebrating its 100th show in 2014

Scott Trial

The “Scott Trial”, still the longest one day trial in the world, and probably the biggest physical and mental challenge of one’s life to many of its competitors.It’s run by Richmond Motor Club.

Reeth Three Day Trial

The motor bicycle trial run by the Richmond Motor Club.

Entertainment

Swaledale Music Festival

 'Britain's most enchanting festival'.  23 May - 6 June 2015, for top-quality music, walks and other excitements; expect the Black Dyke Band and about 60 other events.

In 2014 the Festival’s involvement in education and social well-being and community engagement was recognised by a ‘Big Society’ award by the Prime Minister.

The Tour de France was marked by a splendid sculpture by Michael Kusz which was sponsored by the Festival.

Theatre and Cinema

Reeth Memorial Hall

  • Theatre, Cinema & centre for many other local activities:
  • Reeth Brass Band rehearsals, Tuesday evenings
  • The Dales Ladies group meets at 7.30pm on the first Monday evening of the month
  • A Tea Dance is held monthly on Thursday afternoons
  • Two Dales Gardening Club Meetings are held at 2pm on the 2nd Monday of the month from October to April.
  • Reeth Parish Council Meetings held on the 4th Monday of each month at 7pm.
  • Luncheon Club Meets on the second Wednesday of each month.

North Country Theatre

Based in the Yorkshire Dales, North Country Theatre specialises in taking professional theatre out into the country, touring to village halls, small theatres, arts centres, churches, auction marts, castles, railway waiting rooms, hotels, gardens, almost anywhere in fact.

The Buck Hotel

The Buck has long been THE venue in Reeth for lively Discos, live music from acoustic sessions in the bar, folk-rock and Jazz on the Swale. (Quote from web-site.)

The Tan Hill Inn

Tan Hill Inn has regular live music events. It is also the highest pub in Great Britain.

The Bridge Inn, Grinton

Every Thursday we have live music from locals and visitors alike. Consisting of a variety of music from folk to blues and whatever Martin has come up with!

Melbecks Society

The Melbecks Society has a programme of interesting talks usually held on Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm in the Low Row Institute.

2 Dales Junior Football Club

The football club for both boys and girls aged 5 to 14 years. The Club is based at the Reeth Athletic Field operated by the Reeth and District Community Sports Club Ltd. Orchard Lane, Reeth. N Yorks DL11 6TT and uses the new excellent floodlit MUGA and superb changing facilities, club room and kitchen.

Hazel Brow Farm

Hazel Brow is an award winning traditional family run working farm located in the middle of Low Row village with many attractions, activities and events.

Wensleydale RUFC

Near Leyburn in Wensleydale, this flourishing rugby football club has mini teams for U7 to +12, Junior for U13 to +17 and 2nd & 1st XV teams.

Swaledale MUGA

The new excellent floodlit Multi-use Games Area with superb changing facilities, club room and kitchen. It’s used by many groups in the two dales, such as the Junior Football Club above.
